New Albert Paley Works / Lecture at Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur

Pilchuck #11, sculpture by Albert Paley
Pilchuck #11 Steel, glass
(Width 11.5" Depth 10" Diam 10" Height 29")

Big Sur, California. February 24th, 2003 -- The Hawthorne Gallery, located in the heart of Big Sur, California, today announced the arrival of a major collection of new works from the New York studio of Albert Paley. Mr. Paley will give a lecture on these new works at the Hawthorne Gallery on Saturday, March 29 at 2pm.

The Hawthorne Gallery now exhibits 20 of these new pieces, extending Paley’s natural talent as he moves to integrate glass and metal. Paley states, “This new body of work represents my recent explorations in sculpture and the decorative arts. Many of these works integrate glass and metal. Both media render forms that become organic and submissive in nature through the common use of heat and pressure. ”

Recognized as the leading forged metal sculptor in the world, Albert Paley has completed more than 40 architectural works, his first for the Smithsonian Institution in 1972. He is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Institute Honors Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award to a non-architect.

The Hawthorne Gallery has proudly represented Paley since its inception in 1995, and currently has one of the largest collections of Paley’s works outside of New York. “I’m really impressed with the dynamic combination of glass with the already exciting elements of Albert’s steel work.” says gallery owner Gregory Hawthorne.

For more information, and / or to reserve space at Mr. Paley’s lecture on March 29, please call the Hawthorne Gallery at 831-667-3200, or visit the web-site at www.hawthornegallery.com. Wild Mango at the Hawthorne Gallery

wild mango at the hawthorne galleryOn the evening of Saturday, May 4, 2002, San Francisco-based jazz band Wild Mango gave a beautiful performance below the sculpture garden at the Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur.

Prior to gracing the Gallery with their sounds at the Big Sur JazzFest, (bigsurjazz.org) Wild Mango toured nationally and internationally, bringing to the stage an energetic and passionate fusion of Latin, Jazz, Funk, and Brazilian styles.

Guests traveled from viewing the Gallery's remarkable collection of contemporary art to the dance floor, with stops for tasty snacks by Big Sur Coast Foods along the way.

A chilly spring evening encouraged music lovers to dance to the delicious rhythms of these lovely musicians. Revelers were calling for more at the end of their 2+ hour performance, and Wild Mango responded, giving liberally of their juicy sounds.
Wild Mango is part of a growing trend of women in jazz, recognized by the California Arts Council. The Arts Council has awarded Wild Mango five grants (1996-2002), enabling them to tour throughout the state, performing music workshops for school students.

wild mangoSince 1991, the members of Wild Mango have drawn musical inspiration from around the globe, writing, arranging and performing, "with burning chops and a vibrant spirit", their diverse repertoire of world jazz.

For the past ten years they've performed at major jazz festivals including Aspen, Barbados, Monterey, San Francisco and San Jose. They've opened for such acts as Manhattan Transfer, Tuck & Patti, Poncho Sanchez, Irakere and Los Van Van.
In 1996 the band picked up a "Wammie" for San Francisco's Best World Beat Band, and in 1997 they were nominated for a "Bammie", the coveted Bay Area music award.

In celebration of their tenth anniversary, Wild Mango's latest CD, "Ten" has just been released. For more information (and to purchase this CD) visit www.wildmango.com

Barbara Spring: Her Life & Work
Lecture & Slide Show at the Hawthorne Gallery
Lotta Standing

Sculptor Barbara Spring will discuss her life and work at the Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur in a lecture and slide show on Saturday evening, July 14, from 7-9 p.m.

Barbara grew up beach-combing in Wales as a child, working on her mother’s poultry farm in Kent, England, and then studying at the Gravesend School of Art in Kent and the Central School of Art in London. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during WWII and arrived in the U.S. as a "war bride" on the Queen Mary in 1946.

Her countless exhibits of sculptures and installations in U.S. galleries and art festivals span from her first solo show at the Lucien Labaudt Gallery in San Francisco in 1962 to several shows in the 1990’s—the Oakland Musem of Art, the SOFA in New York and in Chicago, the John Natsoulas Gallery, the Pacific Rim Sculpture Conference in Honolulu and many more. She is considered one of the leading artists to emerge from the San Francisco Bay Region Art movement of the 1960’s and ‘60s.

Barbara’s wood sculptures reveal her keen observation of human nature and genius for creating the subtlest nuances in gesture and expression, as well as her many punning titles, "Upton O’ Good" , "Lotta Standing" and "Natalie Cladd."

For the past 30 years Barbara has lived and worked in Big Sur. She continues to travel, lecture and exhibit her work today.

Please join us for a wonderful and educational evening with Barbara Spring at the Hawthorne Gallery on Saturday, July 14 at 7pm. For more information, please contact the Hawthorne Gallery at 831 667 3200 or via email at art@hawthornegallery.com.

Redwood Water Totems Greet Visitors to Big Sur's Ventana Inn and Spa

If you haven’t been to the Ventana Inn and Spa in Big Sur  lately, you’re in for a surprising treat. Water Totems, three masterfully carved "clearheart" redwood sculptures, now welcomes guests just off of Highway One at the entrance to this well-known resort on California’s Central Coast.

Each 300-500 year old tree (which fell naturally during a fire in a nearby canyon) is sculpted to allow the caress of the downward flow of water. The three 16' high totems create a vision combining water, trees, art, and play which adds to the relaxing and restorative experience visitors enjoy at Ventana.

Sculptors Steve Kuntz and brother-in-law Gregory Hawthorne are the masterminds of this latest one-of-a-kind art installation. With the help of the Hawthorne Gallery team, (including both men's sons, Terry Kuntz, 29 and Taylor Hawthorne, 19) these sculptors designed, carved and carefully transported the totems.

Ventana's General Manager Sal Abaunza reports that, "Water Totems was installed only a few days ago, and we're already hearing the enthusiasm people feel for them. I'm thrilled that they're here!"

Sculptor Gregory Hawthorne adds, "Water Totems  is one of only a few public art installations in Big Sur. Our hope is that these transformed ancient trees will inspire both residents and visitors to Big Sur for many years to come."
